“What Are You Saying?”

Judges 11:1-11; 29-37

The evil influence of pagan worship had infiltrated Israel. Human sacrifice is displeasing and vial to God and is forbidden.  …whatsoever cometh forth of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, shall surely be the Lord’s, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering. And it was Japtha’s only daughter that came out first.

watch your mouth

This is a very disturbing story, but it is not without purpose. God is recording our words. Be very careful when you make a promise to God and do not forget it. Take stock of what you are saying because someday you will be held accountable for your words. Words are powerful. Death and life are in the power of the tongue. Jeptha made a rash promise. Our words determine many things in our life.

Ecc 5:4-5

When thou vowest a vow unto God, defer not to pay it; for he hath no pleasure in fools: pay that which thou hast vowed. Better is it that thou shouldest not vow, than that thou shouldest vow and not pay.

God takes our words that seriously, especially our promises, for you will be as a fool to Him.

Proverbs 15:4

A wholesome tongue is a tree of life: but perverseness therein is a breach in the spirit.

That is why we are here, to bring life and be an encouragement to others.

If you can not say anything nice, don’t say anything at all. satan will come and put words in your mind, but you don’t have to say them. Ask God to sanctify your lips so you do not have to answer for something stupid and insensitive that you have said. That’s the human way isn’t it? No, we are not perfect, but we need to always strive for perfection.

Psalm 139:4

For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O Lord, thou knowest it altogether.

If your words have been against someone, you need to say sorry to God, but also to that person. It matters to God.

James 3:8-10

but the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.  Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.

You cannot bless God and then curse men. God is marking your words. He wants you to evaluate your life. He loves you so much He wants you to check yourself because He wants you to be with Him. He does not accept an unruly tongue. Ask God to forgive you. Determine to be careful what you speak. We need the power of the Holy Spirit to help us.

Seek God tonight. Never forget, God is working on you and for you so you can be victorious in Him.
